Symposium on Transmedia Theory and Practice in Language Learning and Teaching

This one-day symposium addresses research in the areas of Transmedia, Digital Media, Languages and Pedagogy. We have invited five leading academics to present their research in 40-minute presentations followed by 15-20 minutes of Q&A. With the support of the AHRC OWRI Cross-Language Dynamics.

Invited speakers and paper titles:

  • Professor Nicola Whitton (Durham University): The Great Escape: Learning through Collaborative Game Design
  • Paul Spence (King’s College London): Bridges and chasms: on the relationship between (modern foreign) languages and the digital humanities
  • Liz Cable (Leeds Trinity University): The Locked Box and other stories: using escape games for learning and assessment
  • Dr Paul Wake and Dr Sam Illingworth (Manchester Metropolitan): Talking a good game: Using games to teach English as a foreign language

Speakers’ bio notes:

Professor Nicola Whitton is Director of the Durham Centre for Academic Development and Professor of Education at Durham University. Her research focuses on play in adulthood, in particular games and learning in the context of Higher Education, and the potential of play in teaching, research, and academic practice. He most recent projects have focused on the potential of escape room design for learning. She is chair of the Association for Learning Technology Special Interest Group on Playful Learning, and co-chair of the Playful Learning conference.

Paul Spence is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Humanities at King’s College London and has an educational background in Spanish & Spanish American studies. In the past he has led digital research on a number of projects involving digital editing, user-generated content, innovative visualisation and digital publishing. He co-developed the multi-platform publishing framework xMod (now Kiln, which has been used on over 50 projects. His research currently focuses on digitally-mediated knowledge creation, global perspectives on digital scholarship and interactions between modern languages and digital culture. He leads the ‘Digital Mediations’ strand on the Language Acts and World-making project (

Liz Cable is Senior Lecturer in Digital Narratives and Transmedia Production at Leeds Trinity University. She is a PhD candidate investigating the role of immersive games in learning.

Dr Paul Wake is Reader in English Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University and a co-director of the university’s Games Research Network. His current research and teaching is in Transmedia Theory and Practice in Language Learning and Teaching the area of games (analogue and digital) and play, and he has worked on a number of projects using games in education.

Dr Sam Illingworth is Senior Lecturer in Science Communication at Manchester Metropolitan University where he uses poetry and games to develop dialogue between science and society. New deadline for submission of proposal: 10th February

The Manchester Metropolitan University announces its New Approaches to Transmedia and Language Pedagogy International Conference, which will bring together international researchers in all areas of Modern Languages, Pedagogy and Transmedia.

This conference is being convened by the Manchester Metropolitan University and supported by the Open World Research Initiative (OWRI) project entitled ‘Cross-language dynamics: reshaping community’, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

This is an inter-disciplinary conference and papers are welcomed from a wide variety of disciplines and practices areas. Some topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Video Games in Language Education
  • Translingual and Transmedia Education
  • Media Education and Intermediality
  • Film and Visual Arts in Language Education
  • Digital Literacy and Language Education
  • Transculturality and Media in Education
  • Transmedia Practices in Higher and Secondary Education

The conference invites scholars and experts to contribute to the discussions on these areas. Submissions from postgraduate students and early career researchers are particularly welcome. We invite submissions for three types of presentation:

  • Individual papers: Oral presentations on original research by one or more authors within a 20-minute period with 10 minutes for questions.
  • Full panels: Three papers on original research by several authors within a 20-minute period with 10 minutes for questions per paper.
  • Posters: Posters will be displayed during a dedicated poster session. Posters of standard A0 size should be submitted physically to the registration desk on the morning of the conference.

Proposals should be submitted to the organisers at Paper proposals should include a no more than 350 words abstract along with a 100 words speaker bio . Full panel proposals should include a 350 words abstract and 100 words speakers bios per paper, and a short rationale for the full panel (with title and description of the panel/roundtable). Poster proposals should include an abstract of no more than 250 words and a 100 words speaker bio.

The deadline for proposals is 20 January 2019 (new deadline: 10 February 2019). Accepted papers will be notified by 15 February 2019. Early career scholars are encouraged to apply.

Selected papers will be invited to submit for a peer-reviewed volume.

Forthcoming INSET: Using video games and storytelling in language and teaching learning French /Spanish

This INSET event is aimed at teachers of French and Spanish working in Sixth Forms and Colleges, specifically year 9 and 10, but if can be applied to A Levels students. It is informed by the new developments in the GCSE and A Level curriculum and current research evidence.

Designed as an interactive workshop, it provides a framework for introducing video games, transmedia literacy and critical analysis strategies that will help develop skills useful in Language Acquisition and Media Literacy. The event will propose a range of practical activities for embedding transmedia literacy and critical thinking into the language classroom using video games. This format is particularly effective to scaffold practice of the many skills necessary for independently analysing media contents.
